The Colours of Culture 2025 Exhibition
The cankerworm that eats and leaves no crumbs,
It eats into the lives of us,
The melanin that showed that made us slaves to make rows,
The body that people look at, and realize we are threats with ‘tats’,
Everyone is a thief without grief but, the grief knows no bounds,
Because we have colour that makes us people of less honour,
The sense of inferiority is crazy because to them we are lazy,
We need to make our grounds,
We need to take our stands,
We are BLACK, we are UNIQUE, we have MELANIN, and we have colour, so be PROUD.
But why do we have to be different from others?
Why do we have to act differently just to prove them wrong,
So that the stereotypes don’t come to life?
Rest in Paradise to those who lost their lives just to make way for their fellow people,
But again, respect to all because I stand for equality and equity,
Embrace it till you can change it, become a better you, and live a life you are proud to live.
about the poet
I am a Nigerian who moved to Canada two years ago. I am currently in high school. I love reading and writing poems. I like poetry because, it allows me to explore, and create a lot more than I could even say, or do. I tend to think outside the box with poetry. Writing leaves room for creativity and self-expression. It is my coping mechanism when I just want a break from life and reality. I look back at the things I write and use them as an encouragement to write more. It is just a hobby for now.
